The Entertainer Lesson 1 Tab - Advanced Fingerstyle:

I have always loved this song and the arrangement that Chet Atkins gave it an how he played it is truly an inspiration to any fingerstyle guitarist. This part of the the sone includes the introduction and the verse or first half of the song. If you are an advanced fingerstyle guitarist, you will not have a lot of trouble with the arrangement. If you are intermediate, this will be some real finger gymnastics for you. If you are a beginner - don't try this song as it will only discourage you. Come back after you are able to play more complicated pieces.

True Bluegrass InstrumentalsThe Essential Chet Atkins - Chet Atkins: Here is an MP3 of Chet playing the Entertainer as tabbed out on this page. There are some minor differences, but it is essentially the same arrangement by Chet Atkins. Enjoy this version of The Entertainer.

While chet plays this on a classical, there is no reason you can't play it on a good acoustic fingerstyle guitar either. I will admit that his choice of playing this on a great sounding classical guitar was the right one though. I play it on both classical and steel string acoustic and it sound really cool on both of them!

Chet played this on the classical guitar in what is called 'Dropped D" tuning. This is regular tuning on the first 5 strings and the 6th string is tuned down 2 frets to a low "D". Just turn the tuning machine backwards and match the 6th to the 4th string only one octave lower than the 4th string. This gives the guitar an incredible bass response and every time you hit that open 'D', it will give you tingles!

This lesson material will be presented to you in at least 2 parts. The first part will include the TAB and Guitar Pro file for the introduction and the PartA or the verse. The second lesson will finish with the PartB or Chorus and the ending. In the third lesson, we will discover alliterative breaks to this song.

Otherwise if you would like to try a free copy of it, you can download the demo HERE and use it for 15 days.

First things first: This song is played in drop D tuning. This tuning keeps the first 5 strings in standard tuning and you tune the 6th bass string down to a 'D' note, which is 2 frets or a whole step below the standard tuning of 'E'. Simply strike the 6th string while you are lowering the string and compare it to the 4th string open, which is also a 'D' note, but one octave higher. You can also use a tuner to tune it down to the proper 'D' note.

The Entertainer Lesson 1 Tab - Chet Atkins: The introduction for this song is really quite easy if you are accustomed to playing in the upper positions. Closely follow the right and left hand fingering, while looking at the TAB and you will wade throught this part just fine. Like I mentioned in the tab notes, these single notes can be played in a couple of different ways using the RH fingering. You can use the alternating index and middle fingers (i &m), or you can use alternating right hand thumb and index fingers (p & i). By using the thumb method, you will find that you can play the runs much faster - especially at first.

The Entertainer Lesson 1 Tab For the PartA portion of the song (the verse), be sure to follow the chord forms that I have placed above the notation. This will give you insight as to what forms you should hold for that particular measure. I have placed the chord form directly above the note where the chord form should begin. In most cases you will hold this form for several beats, occasionally moving around a finger or two, to hit different lead note variations, but basically the entire chord form will be held as shown in the diagram.

The Entertainer Lesson 1 Tab 6th Measure & 7th Measure: Work on the stretch to get that F note on the 2nd string with the 4th LF finger. It is a reach I know, but it will allow you to keep your other finger(s) in place and keep the notes ringing through each other. As for the 7th measure, finger the A7sus13th chord directly beneath the chord diagram. Only lift up the 4th finger to then form the A7 chord.

The Entertainer Lesson 1 Tab 10th Measure & 11th Measure: Be sure to follow these descending bass notes in the 10th measure. Play them as smoothly as you can. Chet accents these notes just a bit too - mostly because they are so beautiful and he wants that to really come through. In the 11th measure we have one of the hardest chords to finger. It is an E7 with an F# on the top. Again this form should be fingered up front and later release the F# to an open E note on the first string. The 13th through the 16th measures are basically repeats of earlier measures, so no new information for you on those.

The Entertainer Lesson 1 Tab 17th, 18th and Measures: The hardest part of these measures is to get the left hand fingering correct to properly (and more easily) play the descending bass notes of this D form chord. The first chord you form - you are likely to say, are you kidding me? Don't worry though, play the entire passage and you will see the rationale for doing this.

The Entertainer Lesson 1 Tab - Memorize Your Ultimate Guitar Tab:

Make sure to memorize your songs. What is the easiest way to do this? Unless you have perfect pitch, you will have to learn one section or measure at a time. Once you can play flawlessly move on to the next measure and add it to what you have memorized. Continue this and make sure you can play the first half of the song, including the second ending.

Once you have the first half memorized, move on to the second half, doing the same thing with the second half of the song.
