The Taylor BT1 aka the Baby Taylor is an ideal starter guitar for young children and adults on the go as well. The neck is easily detachable with (2) Phillips head screws and easily comes apart for packing in a suitcase.
I feel that the satin finish on this guitar is total appropriate. If you travel with guitar or it is used by a young child, a gloss finish would get totally trashed. The satin finish will give you a great looking guitar for many years.
The chrome tuners appeared to have a bit of play in them and did not give me a good impression.
The Taylor BT1 guitar does put out a great sound for what your are paying. As in all small-body guitars, this one too is quite thin on tone, not much in the mid-tones, but plenty of treble and a surprising amount of bass response for a small guitar.
Understand I give it only a 5 rating as compared to ALL other guitars and when you compare this guitar to a Martin D28, well there is no comparison. But compared to other guitars in this price range it is better than average.
I thought the action on the Taylor BT1 was quite good on this guitar, although the intonation was a bit off, which was curious. I would get this guitar on the bench and adjust the nut and saddle a bit. For a young child you certainly want a guitar to play as easy as possible. Adjustments are needed to virtually all guitars in this price category.
Having the Sapele Laminate back and sides makes for a durable guitar, at the price of some tone. But, that is the trade-off we face.
I believe this guitar will give you a long service without a lot of repair as long as its not abused.
Be sure to register your Taylor BT1. If you treat your guitar right you will be able to keep it in great playing condition for a long time. The biggest enemy of a hollow body acoustical guitar is the lack or the excess of humidity in the air. If you develop problems, a Taylor repair center will take care of you.
The Taylor BT1 is a great option for a starter guitar for your young child. It is small and they can grasp it quite easily and reach those note near the nut. It is a great guitar for the price.
If you are a traveler, again this would be a good choice. With the detachable neck and good tone, you can take your guitar with you.
The satin finish fits this guitar well and is a good choice.
Taylor outfits the Taylor BT1 guitar with Elixir Nanoweb Strings, which are great long-lasting strings.
