I will have four versions of Salt Creek Guitar TAB available. Note that the 4th version presented here are just a few of them more impressive licks performed by Tony Rice.

Salt Creek Beginner Guitar Tab - The First Break Again this is a very basic arrangement of the fiddle tune Salt Creek. Played up to speed, this break sounds incredible. Use this beginning break as a foundation of what is to come. That is lots of syncopation and melodic chording.

Notice that the first 2 measures are a kick-of to set up the rhythm of the song and the rhythm guitar does not play during the kick-off.

The link to the beginner version is: Salt Creek Beginner Tab.

Salt Creek Intermediate Guitar Tab - The Second Break: Hold on for this one. There is a lot of great stuff in this break. I have thrown in melodic picking, lots of crosspicking and lots of slide, pull-offs, hammer-ons and who knows what. Have some fun with this one and be sure to play it extremely slow to nail the rhythm as there are a lot of notes 'off-beat' on this break and they can really get you messed up in a hurry. Play the Guitar Pro file in speed trainer mode for sure on this one to gain speed gradually.

The link to the Intermediate version is: Salt Creek Intermediate Tab.

Salt Creek Advanced Guitar Tab - The Third Break: This break is not quite up to the Advanced Version category. It is based a bit on Norman Blake's break with a few of his more complicated frills left out. If you are not used to playing a como chord-lead then this may definitely be an Advanced Break for you though. Study this style of playing a lead break and see if you can apply it to other songs. Just another trick to add to your repretoir!

If you can play this break 'up-to-speed' you can consider yourself well on your way to becoming an advanced flatpick guitarist. The nice thing about it is that this song is played at a more leisurely speed of between 160 and 180bpm, which will give you a chance to really nail this break. Good Luck!

Salt Creek Advanced Licks - Tony Rice: Are you ready for these choice guitar licks or breaks? In the song Salt Creek, Tony goes into a few incredible blues-type breaks in a couple of different locations in the song. The first lick is located at about 2:56 into the song and the second and longer lick is located at about 2:48 into the song.

You will find both of these to be very challenging, but also very satisfying to play. Work diligently on them to master them and impress your guitar buddies. Look for more Rice breaks coming up.

How do I do it? How do I transcribe these incredibly fast guitar breaks? It is simplier than you think. I have been using Capo Slowdown Software for the Mac. It let's be slow down these lightening fast guitar breaks to a crawl and yet preserves the key and the tone. If you have a Mac or a new iPhone, I highly recommend it. It's only $49.00 on the Mac and $19.00 on the iPhone and I don't know about you, but my time is certainly worth that. It saves an amazing amount of time!

True Bluegrass InstrumentalsThis and the Second Blake and Rice are two of the all time best flatpicking' albums ever recorded. Tony's sense of improvisation is the perfect foil to Norman's intricate and classic playing. The addition of Doc Watson on several cuts ices the cake. The production sets the standard for recordings of acoustic instruments. If you like flatpicked acoustic guitars, this cd is a must!

It's Raining Here This Morning, Lost Indian, Georgie, Father's Hal, The Two Soldiers, Blackberry Blossom, Eight More Miles to Louisville, Lincoln's Funeral Train (The Sad Journey to Springfield), Molly Bloom, D-18 Song (Thank You, Mr. Martin), Back in Yonder's World, Bright Days, Salt Creek

Watch your up and down strokes carefully. It is critical that you keep them consistent. Down strokes are almost always on the downbeat and upstrokes are often on the upbeat, but not always. We have clearly shown the down and up strokes below each note in the tab. The down-up strokes are shown on the tab below the Guitar Tab staff.

Guitar Pro has a really cool feature called speed trainer. you can set a loop of accompaniment chords to be played and after each loop the speed increased by a percent that you specify. I love this feature and it gives you milestone very clearly as to you speed conditioning.

This song is usually played in the key of G Major with a capo on the second fret so it is really played in the key of A Major.
