God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen PartC Tab - Intermediate Fingerstyle:

This is a piece that I have played for years now. I would say it is a cross between Atkins and Travis, but probably more towards Chet's style. I play it either fingerstyle acoustic or on the classical guitar and it sounds equally good on both. The song starts out solo without any accompaniment and ends in the same manner. The first part is quite easy to play so even you beginners can tackle this one. In the second part we will drift more into the alternating bass type of playing in true Atkins style.

Fingerstyle Christmas GuitarFingerstyle Christmas Guitar: Mark Hanson is a great fingerstyle guitarist and this book of Christmas Songs demonstrats that fact. If you are just starting out with fingerstyle guitar this book may be a little deep for you. There are 12 songs and they are divided into 4 beginner tunes, 4 intermediate and 4 advanced. All are richly transcribed and you definitely learn a lot from this book!

Twelve beautiful new arrangements for solo acoustic guitar. Including: Angels We Have Heard on High * The First Noel * Go Tell It on the Mountain * Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas * In Dulce Jubilo * It Came Upon a Midnight Clear * Joy to the World * Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence * O Come Little Children * O Little Town of Bethlehem * Silent Night * Winter Wonderland.

PartA

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen PartA Tab: The hardest part of this partA tab will be the right hand fingering. Follow it closely to get it just right. I placed the chord forms above the score to give you some guidance as to where to place your fingers, because as you know with fingerstyle guitar, the chords are not always that evident until you put the entire piece together.

There is no rhythm guitar part on this portion of the song, for the way I arranged it if for this to be played as a solo - almost as an INTRO. Pick the notes clearly and let each individual note ring to get the full effect. I worked very hard to capture the subtleties of the song in the Guitar Pro file and I think you will agree - this is a beautiful fingerstyle piece. Too bad it is a song of the Christmas season and usually isn't played year around.

If the ending or last measure sound a little incomplete, it is because we are getting setup for the PartB break. You will see why when I introduce that break next.

PartB

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen PartB Tab: Okay here we go. Fully engaged in Chet Atkins fingerstyle guitar. Most of this break is played with the alternating bass with the RH thumb. There are several breaks or stops that are great for effect and a bit of surprise for the audience and just add a bit of color to the break.

The intent of this break is to really emphasize the beat. This is very different from the PartA, which is not nearly as structured and much more free-flowing. The change is very nice.

PartC

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen PartC Tab: The third break of this song will be very easy for you. All it is, is a combination of the the PartA and PartB. Its very cool because we break from the rigid rhythm of PartB, back into a free-flowing solo similar to PartA and end the song with the last part of PartB with the full instrumentation. All in all a great show-off piece you will want to master.

Memorize Your Ultimate Guitar Tab:

Make sure to memorize your songs. What is the easiest way to do this? Unless you have perfect pitch, you will have to learn one section or measure at a time. Once you can play flawlessly move on to the next measure and add it to what you have memorized. Continue this and make sure you can play the first half of the song, including the second ending.

Once you have the first half memorized, move on to the second half, doing the same thing with the second half of the song.
