Arkansas Traveler Advanced Tab:

In this lesson of Guitar Tabs from Ultimate Guitar OnLine we will explore another of the most popular Acoustic Guitar Solos. Arkansas Traveler. Nearly every flatpick guitar artist has a good version or versions of this under their belt. One of my favorite arrangements is by the great flatpick guitarists of all time, Norman Blake. If you are looking for only one Flatpick Guitar CD, this is the one you should have in your collection. Norman was playing great flatpicking guitar breaks before some of today's artists were born. He is still known as one of the best players ever!

True Bluegrass InstrumentalsNorman Blake's CD Arkansas Traveler: Norman is one of the most fascinating and talented guitar players out there. This was the first flatpicking guitar album that I purchased and I still love it and play the songs constantly.

Other songs include: Hand Me Down My Walking Cane; Under the Double Eagle; Six White Horses; Salt River; Old Gray Mare; Down At Mylow's House; Sleepy Eyed Joe/ Indian Creek; Arkansas Traveler; The Girl I Left in Sunny Tennessee; The Minstrel Boy to the War Has Gone / The Ash Grove; Church St. Blues; Macon Rag; Fiddler's Dram / Whiskey Before Breakfast; Slow Train Through Georgia.

All of these files were authored in eMedia's Guitar-Pro. This is the favorite tab and notation authoring software for us here at Ultimate Guitar OnLine. It is filled with features and is simple to use - even without a manual. It is compatible with PC and Mac. We use it on the Mac here and it is a pleasure to use. To see a full review click HERE. The First Break:

Arkansas Traveler Intermediate Tab - The First Break: Get the basics down first on this break. It is necessary to lay down the fabric of this song first, with this beginner version. Once you have memorized it, can play it smoothly and can play it at about 160 to 180 beats per minute, you will be ready to play the intermediate version.

This is a very straight forward break and it shouldn't pose too much of a problem for you. Just play along with the Guitar Pro file, which you can download for free, above and use the speed trainer, to slowly and steadily build your speed and before you know it you will be playing this at 180 bpm.

In the second measure, be sure to play the double note clearly by following through with your guitar pick. These are all quarter notes through this section so it is all downbeats here.

The Second Break:

Arkansas Traveler Intermediate Tab - The Second Break: This break steps up the difficultly of this break quite a bit over the beginner version. You can start out with the beginner version and, it is a great break by itself when you can rip it off at full speed. Now comes a break that can really raise some eyebrows.

This break to Arkansas Traveler Intermediate Tab, utilizes some ornamental notes that where you will need to devote additional practice. One commonly used element in flatpick guitar is a hammer-on triplet. One of these is in the 7th measure.

Also this break is riddled with hammer-ons and pull-offs. When played correctly, the listener cannot distinguish between these are picked notes, so work on these to help build speed and to give your right hand a break.

The Third Break:

Arkansas Traveler Advanced Tab - The Third Break: With the third break of Arkansas Traveler, we will come back to the treble strings and play a blazing fast break of this song with a lot of ornamentals, like pull-offs, hammer-ons and slides. While the difficulty rating of this third break is about the same as the intermediate version, I classified it as advanced because of the rapid fire eighth notes you will be encountering.

If you learn to play this break up to proper speed you will be the star of the parking lot picking' group. Other picker's will ask how you do that. Use this break to build up your own breaks. Feel free to use the Free Guitar Pro file to augment and make it truly your own style.

Watch your up and down strokes carefully. It is critical that you keep them consistent. Down strokes are almost always on the downbeat and upstrokes are almost always on the upbeat. Having trouble with Crosspicking technique? We have a great article on Learning How to Crosspick.

Guitar Pro has a really cool feature called speed trainer. you can set a loop of accompaniment chords to be played and after each loop the speed increased by a percent that you specify. I love this feature and it gives you milestone very clearly as to you speed conditioning.

Arkansas Traveler Advanced Tab - Memorize Your Ultimate Guitar Tab:

Make sure to memorize your songs. What is the easiest way to do this? Unless you have perfect pitch, you will have to learn one section or measure at a time. Once you can play flawlessly move on to the next measure and add it to what you have memorized. Continue this and make sure you can play the first half of the song, including the second ending.

Once you have the first half memorized, move on to the second half, doing the same thing with the second half of the song.
