Acoustic Guitars - The Buyers Guide Taylor Guitar Buy Acoustic Guitar - Taylor Guitar

If you are planning to buy an acoustic guitar, this is one of my favorite subjects because I have built a few of these great-sounding, big voiced guitars. By altering body size, depth and tone woods, you can achieve a infinite variety of tones and volume.

The Flattop Guitar is Very Popular

The bluegrass or flattop guitar is one of the most popular stringed instruments of all time. Over the years factory production has been led by C.F. Martin Guitar, Gibson Guitar, Gretsch and Epiphone Guitars. These companies have been around for a long time. If you plan to buy an acoustic guitar, do not overlook these companies.

Lately, while the big US companies are still around and producing a lot of guitars, in the 1960's the Japanese market of guitars started taking over the low end spectrum of guitars. While they were not terrible guitars, they served their purpose as being a good "starter" guitar of sorts. They were inexpensive quite durable and sounded a bit better than putting strings on a wash tub. OK maybe better than that!

Gibson Acoustic Guitar Acoustic Guitars - Gibson Acoustic Guitar

Mostly they were constructed with plywood backs and sides. This provided the durability part of the equation. It was tough to get them to have nice action, but it was possible. When my students asked me for advice to buy an acoustic guitar I would recommend Yamaha guitars, Alvarez Guitars and Takamine Guitars.

At least Alvarez and Takamine, along with Ibanez have great beginner guitars. They even have nice intermediate guitars of fine quality and don't overlook them when you buy an acoustic guitar.

Acoustic Guitars - Martin & Gibson Martin D28 Guitar Acoustic Guitars - Martin D-28

Today C.F Martin is still producing quality guitars and Gibson pumps out many of the same models they did around the 1940's to 1950's , but they never quite measured up to the Martin pre-war collectibles. The newer models produced today are better than those of the 70's and 80's though. So I would recommend you look at these companies too whey you but an acoustic guitar

Martin D18 Guitar Acoustic Guitars - Martin D18

To buy an acoustic guitar in the lower price range, consider Yamaha, Martin, Epiphone, Takamine and Ibanez:

Just about everybody is in the middle-priced market. this would include guitars from $799 to $2,500. Some standouts are C.F Martin Guitar, Gibson Guitar, Breedlove, Taylor Guitar and Seagull.

To buy an acoustic guitar in the $2,500 and up area would be C.F. Martin, Taylor, Gibson and Collings. And of course you can pay nearly anything you want above that for a custom made guitar, built by a luthier (stringed instrument builder). They will match a guitar to your playing style, tone requirements and volume expectations.

Martin D41V Acoustic Guitars - Martin D41V Detail

In your quest to buy an acoustic guitar, you are likely to see many variations. Some of these will be single cut-away, which means the body is shaped to allow you to finger the higher frets from 14 to 18 or so with much greater ease.

Also the standard for acoustic guitars is for the neck to join the body at the 14th fret. There are some models that join at the 12th fret, similar to a classical guitar.

The Dreadnought was Originated by Martin

Other variations you will see are differing body shapes. The standard is a "dreadnought" and was invented by the C.F. Martin Co. back when they were making pre-war (1930's to 1941) Guitars that are now prized and sell for 10's of thousands of dollars. Most popular were D18's and then D28's. The 18 was mahogany and the 28 Brazilian Rosewood.

Some Acoustic Guitars are outfitted with a pickup and volume and tone controls. Personally, I prefer to add this pickup assembly myself so I can pick a system that will do very little to compromise the tonal qualities of a great guitar. See my article on Guitar Pickups for more information on this.

Gibson Acoustic Guitar Martin D28 Acoustic Guitar Buy an Acoustic Guitar - Get a Teacher Or Salesman to Play for You

Buy an Acoustic Guitar Tip - If you go to a music store to buy acoustic guitar, try to get a teacher or the salesman to play several different models for you. If you can't play one well enough or feel a little self-conscious about playing if front of other people, kindly ask a customer to play one for you. Nearly every guitar player would be happy to do this for you because remember, they had to start where you are right now.

Buy an Acoustic Guitar Tip - How can you tell a high quality acoustic guitar? There is no question. From that first strum across the strings to the clear and long sounding high notes to the dramatic lows. Also playability "up the neck" is very good and easy to do. Intonation will be perfect as well as  all harmonics.

Strings Make Quite a Difference in Sound

Acoustic Guitar Buying Tip - Strings can make quite a difference in the tone and volume of a flattop guitar. I prefer light-gage strings for lead playing and easy playability. Some musicians prefer a louder sound and go with the medium gage.

Worland Good Shepard Guitar Taylor 210e Acoustic Guitar

Buy an Acoustic Guitar Tip - Watch out for heavy gage strings as they can put increased tension on the top and bridge, causing the top to belly and the neck to pull up. If either of these two things happen, you will likely be making a trip to the repair shop.

Buy an Acoustic Guitar Tip - Be sure to check out my article Best Guitar Buying Tips. I have a lot of information about what to look for in construction, tonewoods, guitar problems and suggestions on buying either a classical or acoustic guitar. There will also be a lot of in-depth information on guitar building section of the site.
